8 WAYS TO AVOID THE "SILENT KILLER"
High blood pressure(hypertension) is a medical condition in which the force of blood against the artery wall is too high. A person is diagnosed with hypertensive if at least after 2days check the blood pressure measures the systolic blood pressure of greater or equal to 140mmHg and a diastolic pressure of greater or equal to 90mmHg.
Hypertension is a very common medical condition in the world with an estimated population of 1.28 million adults of age 30 -79 years. Nigeria is not an exception estimated population of 1.5 million Nigerians is diagnosed with this condition yearly and 46% of these people are unaware because of a lack of regular checkups or poor health care facilities, which is the leading cause of sudden death.
WHAT ARE THE POSSIBLE CAUSES OR RISK FACTORS?
Hypertension doesn't have a cause. However, some factors can lead to the onset of hypertension these are;
Excessive salt consumption
Consumption of a diet high in saturated fat
Low intake of fruits and vegetables
Physical inactivity
Tobacco and alcohol consumption
Obesity
Diseases such as diabetes, kidney disease
Prolong stress
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Hypertension is called the silent killer because most often is asymptomatic presenting no symptoms or signs. This makes regular blood pressure checks very essential.
However, if symptoms do occur there could include;
Early morning headaches
Irregular heartbeat or rhythm
Buzzing in the ear
Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting
Confusion
Anxiety
Muscle tremors
It is advisable if you feel any of these or any way you don't understand to visit a doctor.
Reducing salt intake
Reduce alcohol consumption
Avoid tobacco
Engage in regular exercises
Reduce intake of meals with high saturated fat
Eat more fruits and vegetables
Reduces and manages stress
And most importantly, a regular blood pressure check.
